Josh Kurfirst

Chief Operating Officer / Head of Business Development

Son of legendary music manager Gary Kurfirst and protégé to Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Chris Blackwell, Josh Kurfirst has established himself as one of the leading minds in helping to shape the future of the music business.  Starting off his career as an A&R assistant at Radioactive Records in the 90’s, Kurfirst was part of label that sold over 25 Million albums worldwide. In 2000 Kurfirst senior and Blackwell teamed up to form Kurfirst-Blackwell Entertainment and called on young Kurfirst to run the newly formed management/record company conglomerate. With a diverse roster that included artists such as The Ramones, Talking Heads, Live, Ambulance Ltd, Lake Trout, Los Amigos Invisibles, Yerba Buena, Si*Se, Indigenous and numerous others – KBE was dedicated to building artist brands and increasing client profitability by diversifying revenue streams through a multifaceted approach to the music business.  In early 2010 after a brief stint as an independent talent buyer / festival producer for AEG, Live Nation and Wasserman Media Group, Kurfirst teamed up with Little Steven and Renegade Nation and set his sights on developing a new online platform that empowers artists by giving them the tools to take control of their own music careers.  By offering similar services to a traditional label / management company, but applying it to an online-forum, Kurfirst believe Fuzztopia.com will emerge from the ruins of the old industry to become the leading platform for emerging artists in the new digital age of music.

Company Profile

Renegade Nation is a 21st century media company whose business model is based on Rock and Roll. At present, the company’s operations include broadcast and satellite radio programming, live event production, television and film content, music consulting, on-line programming, merchandising, and record distribution.

Steven Van Zandt, of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and The Sopranos fame and founder of Renegade Nation, launched an ambitious revolution four years ago with the goal of re-igniting the excitement, the passion, and the glory that is Rock and Roll. With a keen sensibility toward the guitar-driven Rock and Roll of the ‘50s and ‘60s, Renegade Nation is reintroducing Rock to millions of Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers hungry for an alternative to today’s limited, cookie-cutter radio formats. Key to the success of Renegade Nation is redefining the music business itself, rewriting the rules associated with the production, promotion, and distribution of music and music-related content. Thanks to Van Zandt, authentic Rock and Roll and its associated philosophy of cool, fun rebellion is re-emerging with a growing fervor under the genre of Garage Rock.

Thus, Renegade Nation was born to take Rock and Roll to new heights by creating a new infrastructure for finding, supporting, and bringing success to great bands and great music. The company comprises multiple, complementary business divisions, each providing a support mechanism that when taken holistically creates an effective business model for developing, promoting, and marketing Rock music in a variety of formats across a multiplicity of channels. These businesses include: Renegade Radio (radio programming including Little Steven’s Underground Garage syndicated radio show and Sirius Satellite programs), Renegade Circus (live events and promotions), Wicked Cool Records (record label), Renegade Talent (artist agency), Renegade Film (film production), Renegade Television (live and pre-recorded television) and Renegade Swag (merchandising/distribution).

Today, Little Steven’s Underground Garage is a certified success and cultural phenomenon, with an audience of approximately 1.2 million people every week in 200 markets across the US and Canada. The program is also broadcast internationally in 44 additional countries. Renegade Nation also has two music channels on the Sirius satellite radio network, Underground Garage and Outlaw Country, as well as a weekly talk show, It’s The Wise Guy Show.

During 2004 the company sponsored regional Battle of the Bands competitions to showcase rising talent, with the finals held in New York City and broadcast on MTV. Renegade Nation also held the critically acclaimed International Underground Garage Festival in New York featuring 45 live bands, including classic acts like The New York Dolls and The Stooges as well as new favorites like The Raveonettes, The Strokes, and The Mooney Suzuki.

The increasing use of popular music in advertising and branding campaigns has provided a growing revenue stream for Renegade Nation. The company has attracted sponsorship from major companies including Hard Rock Café, Pepsi, Unilever, Dunkin’ Donuts and Rolling Rock. By maintaining a focus on providing only the best Rock n’ Roll to the fans, the Little Steven’s Underground Garage brand has continued to increase both its reach and its credibility while incorporating sponsorship into its events.

Renegade Nation is now looking to leverage its existing assets and relationships to vertically integrate along the music industry supply chain, including launching an artist agency, creating multiple recurring touring networks to showcase its bands, and developing TV programming to include live band performances.

Renegade and Billboard magazine have jointly launched a weekly Little Steven’s Underground Garage chart and column that feature all that’s cool in the Underground Garage world.
